Mid-Course Evaluation
Following the fourth week of the clerkship, the Clerkship Director meets with each of the students to complete a mid-course evaluation. This will give the student an opportunity to review his or her performance, and will not factor into the final grade. The Clerkship Coordinator will schedule an appointment for each student.
Examinations
Final examinations include a written examination and
OSCE examination, as well as a SIMMs assessment.
These examinations comprise 40% of the final grade as outlined
above.
OSCE
The OSCE on GI bleeding is designed to specifically review the students’ grasp of the surgical issues as is reflected in their log records. Students are expected to gather information from the standardized patient efficiently and accurately, perform a focused Physical Exam, generate an appropriate differential, request the appropriate testing, and come up with treatment options.
You will be assigned a specific time to come for this 30-minute OSCE session during 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM on the last Thursday of the clerkship.
Student Clerkship Survey
The Dean's Office conducts an assessment through an anonymous web-based questionnaire prior to their written examination. This enables the school and the department to monitor and adjust problem areas as well as to allow the recognition of areas of excellence. The Surgery Department strongly encourages all clerkship students to complete this survey.
