Objectives

  • Elicit thorough and pertinent patient histories.
  • Conduct complete physical exams.
  • Write pertinent notes in the chart on the team's patients (H and Ps, operative notes, postoperative checks, daily progress notes)
  • Interpret common radiological and laboratory data.
  • Formulate a differential diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Understand surgical decision making, including the timing and need for an operation and be able to communicate this to others (patient education, informed consent).
  • Read about common surgical problems and principles.
  • Learn basic surgical skills.
  • Understand operative technique, surgical anatomy and pathology.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior (honesty, responsibility, respect to patients and colleagues, commitment and enthusiasm towards learning).
