Resident Forums
House Staff Committee - House staff representatives from each year meet with the Program Director once a month to discuss rotation schedules, 405 regulations and other important issues.

House Staff Council - Twenty one house staff officers from all programs sit on the School's House Staff Council, including three representatives from the Department of Surgery. They meet with the Dean to implement new processes in the Residency program.

Resident Advisory Program - Each resident is assigned a faculty advisor in the sub-specialty they are interested in within Surgery. The advisors meet with the residents 2 times a year and play an integral role in forming the resident's career.

In addition, each resident meets with the Program Director semi-annually. There are also resident meetings quartely with the Chairman.

Library Access
The residents have full access to the online collection of journals and reference materials offered by the library from anywhere on campus or from their homes.

The Frederick L. Ehrman Medical Library at NYU has some 140,000 books and 1500 periodicals. It offers full computer access and inter library loans, with fiber optic cable access to libraries and researches worldwide. The Bellevue library has more than 10,000 books and 250 periodicals and the VA library has 3000 books and 410 periodicals. In addition, the Department of Surgery maintains dedicated libraries of texts, journals, audiovisuals and electronic teaching tools in each of the three hospitals.

Policies and Procedures
The institution provides residents with tutorials on fatigue, resident stress, support for psychological counseling, cultural sensitivity training and procedures for handling complaints and grievances. The Department of Surgery has a time off and leave of absence policy which includes maternity leave. All polices are handed out during orientation in the House staff manual.

Books
In addition to the book stipend that the residents receive from the institution, the Department purchases Greenfield textbooks for the new residents for the core surgical curriculum. For senior residents, the department also purchases SESAP-12 study aides.

Travel Expenses
The Department of Surgery covers travel expenses for residents who are presenting at national meetings. This benefit is in addition to the travel expenses provided by the institutions.
