GENERAL SURGERY CONFERENCE: The Tuesday morning general surgery conference resumes tomorrow, September 9, 2008 at 7:30am in Coles 101. All general surgery faculty and residents should attend.

GRAND ROUNDS: The first Department of Surgery Grand Rounds for the new academic year is scheduled for Wednesday, September 17th at 7:30am in Smilow 1st Floor Seminar Room. Dr. Leon Pachter, the George David Stewart Professor and Chairman of Surgery will speak on "Global Terrorism: Medical and Political Challenges of New Millennium." All surgical faculty and residents are strongly encouraged to attend. Please mark your calendars of this date and time.

CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. George Miller who received the Whitehead Fellowship for Junior Faculty in Biomedical and Biological Sciences for $10,000.

PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS:
Dr. Thomas Riles & Dr. Thomas Maldonado were invited speakers to the 17th Annual Meeting of the National Vascular Society of Argentina.
Dr. Maldonado gave lectures on:

  • Complicated cases with endovascular repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms
  • Occlusion of filters during carotid angioplasty
  • The management of renal artery aneurysms
  • New technologies for treatment of the occluded femoral artery


Dr. Riles presented lectures on:

  • Ischemic complications with endovascular repair of abdominal aoritc aneurysms
  • New modalities for imaging the carotid arteries
  • Management of the thoracic outlet syndromes
  • New technologies for teaching vascular surgery to students and residents

Dr. Ronald Simon has a manuscript accepted for publication entitled "The Impact Of A New Trauma Center On An Existing Near-By Trauma Center" in The Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection and Critical Care.

Dr. George Plitas had a paper published in August issue of Nature entitled "Vancomycin-resistant enterococci exploit antibiotic-induced innate immune deficits."
