GRAND ROUNDS: The next Department of Surgery Grand Rounds will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 7:30am in Alumni Hall B. Dr. John Kirby, Director of Wound Healing program and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis will present on "Necrotizing Fasciitis in Acute Wound Care." All surgical faculty and resident must attend. Please mark your calendars with this date and time.

FACULTY MEETING: The next Department faculty meeting will be on Monday, December 1, 2008 in Coles 101. All surgical faculty must attend. Please mark your calendars with this date and time.

DATE CHANGE- DEPARTMENT HOLIDAY PARTY: Due to unforeseen conflict and also recruitment day, the Department's 2008 Holiday party will now be held on Monday, December 22nd, 6:30- 10 pm at the Twenty Four Fifth, 5th avenue between 9th and 10th streets. PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS:
Dr. George and Christine Fielding were faculty at the First Annual Gastric Band Summit on Oct 27-28, held in Orlando, FL.
The lectures that they gave included:
"Low BMI with and without co-morbidities"
"Pediatric morbid obesity"
"Patient management: Adjustment Strategies"
"Patient management options"
"Hospital and Practice Management: Threshold for Physician Extenders"

Dr. Marina Kurian and Dr. Michael Silberstein published a case report in the journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Disease. (2008) entitled "Clinical and radiologic findings of massive gastric prolapse after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding."

Dr. Deborah Axelrod presented at the 136th American Public Health Association, Public Health Without Borders, in San Diego last week on: AMBER: Arab American Breast Education Resource program. Dr. Axelrod received her second STEP grant from the Komen Foundation for the AMBER program which is a community based health intervention to increase education and breast screening amongst Arab Americans.

Dr. Axelrod also presented Grand Rounds at Elmhurst hospital on Breast Cancer Screening: Staying out of Trouble during the week of October 25th.

Dr. Omar Bholat presented a poster at the ACS entitled "Patterns of Injury in New York City Prisoners" By Omar Bholat, Spiros Frangos, Maurizio Miglietta, Josh Marcus, Daniel Smith and H. Leon Pachter.

Dr. Manish Parikh was coauthor on a paper in the Nov issue of the American Journal of Surgery: Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy for Morbid Obesity by Moy J, Pomp A, Dakin G, Parikh M and Gagner M.

Dr. Anathea Powell gave an invited talk for a NIH graduate course last week, "Developing New Techniques for Tumor Angiogenesis Quantification."
