GRAND ROUNDS: The first Department of Surgery Grand Rounds for the new academic year is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16th at 7:15am in Schwartz Lecture Hall E. Dr. Richard Karl, Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Surgery, Moffitt Cancer Center at the University of South Florida will present on "What can the Operating Room learn from the Cockpit." All surgical faculty and residents are strongly encouraged to attend. Please mark your calendars of this date and please mark the new early time.
CONGRATULATIONS to the NYU Transplant Division which continues to meet Aetna's criteria as an Institute of Excellence for adult liver transplantation

Dr. H. Leon Pachter and Dr. Manish Parikh have a chapter recently published on emedicine:

Dr. Manish Parikh gave 2 lectures:
1) "Bariatric Surgery and Psychiatry Work-up" at Pyschiatry Consult-Liason Resident Conference at Bellevue on Aug 4.
2) "Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery" at the Internal Medicine Resident Core Conference, in conjunction with Dr. Michelle McMacken of the Bellevue Medical Weight Management Clinic on Jul 28.
The Division of Endocrine Surgery was well represented at
the recent World Congress on Thyroid Cancer held in Toronto,
Canada. This was
the first such meeting of its kind.
Dr. Kepal Patel presented a paper entitled "Spry2 expression reflects MAPK
pathway activation in thyroid cancer". He also moderated a paper session on
"Surgery of Thyroid Cancer".
Dr. Jennifer Ogilvie presented a paper entitled "BRAF V600E mutation in primary
thyroid lymphoma". Sam Serouya, a third year NYU medical student presented a
paper entitled "'Complete' total thyroidectomy is achievable" coauthored by Dr.
Keith Heller.
Dr. Heller also presented at a "Meet the Professor" luncheon on "How to Build an Endocrine Surgical Practice" and participated in a panel discussion on "Thyroid cancer: when not to treat".
The Resident and Associate Society of the American College of Surgeons is pleased to announce that Anathea C. Powell, MD of New York, NY has won the $500 prize for her submission to the Mentorship Essay Competition on the late Dr. Erwin F. Hirsch, Chief of Trauma Surgery, Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Powell will receive her award at the annual RAS meeting, Sunday, October 11.
