NEW SURGICAL CLERKS - The Department welcomes 20 new surgical clerks today. They were oriented today and will report to their clinical teams Tomorrow, Tuesday morning. Please make an effort to get to know your medical students by name. Bert will send to you their clinical assignments and pictures shortly. Thank you for welcoming them. CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Marco Melis on his appointment as the Cancer Liaison Physician for VA New York Harbor HCS. Dr. Melis has already invigorated our Cancer Program with his interest, enthusiasm and commitment to high quality patient care. His appointment as Cancer Liaison Physician is certain to further enhance collaboration between the Brooklyn and New York campuses in all aspects of our program, including research, clinical care and community outreach.
GRAND ROUNDS: The next Surgery Grand Rounds lecture will be on Wednesday March 18, 2009 at 7:30 AM in Smilow 1st Floor Seminar Room. Dr. Marc Bessler, Surgical Director of the Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery and Director of Minimal Access Surgery at Columbia will present on "Natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery - NOTES." All Surgery Faculty and Residents are strongly encouraged to attend.
PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS:
Dr. Manish Parikh gave 2 lectures last week:
1. "Update on Bellevue Bariatric Surgery" to the Primary Care Division of the Dept of Medicine, Bellevue Hospital Center.
2. "Bariatric Surgery and Pregnancy/Fertility" at the Manhattan Regional Perinatal Forum.
Drs. Daniel Ceradini and Joseph Michaels were co-authors on a paper from Geoffrey Gurtner's lab published in this month's FASEB Journal entitled "Tissue engineering using autologous microcirculatory beds as vascularized bioscaffolds." (FASEB J. 2009 23: 906-915.) This work was featured on the cover and included in a press release by the journal (http://www.fasebj.org/Press_Room/08_114868.shtml). This paper was based on experiments detailed in an NIH grant awarded from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging And Bioengineering in 2003 authored by Drs. Ceradini and Gurtner.
