GRAND ROUNDS: The next Surgery Grand Rounds lecture will be on Wednesday January 21, 2009 at 7:30 AM in Smilow 1st Floor Seminar Room. Dr. Charles B. Rosen, Associate Professor of Surgery and Surgical Director for the Mayo Clinic Rochester Liver Transplant Program will speak on "Neoadjuvant therapy and liver transplantation for unresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma - a new paradigm for hepatobiliary malignancy."

DEPARTMENT FACULTY MEETING: Please note that the next faculty meeting will be held on Monday, January 26, 2009 from 5-7pm in Coles 101. This meeting will strictly be on finalizing the resident recruitment rank list and the upcoming RRC site visit. Faculty who interviewed are strongly encouraged to attend. The meeting may last up to 2 hours.

IN THE NEWS: Dr. Thomas Diflo was interviewed for and featured in an article in Newsweek this week about organ trafficking.

NEW APPOINTMENTS: Dr. Diflo appointed as the Chairman of NYU IRB Board C.

Dr. Harvey Moore has been appointed Cancer Liaison Physician for Bellevue Hospital Center by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons for the term July 1, 2008-July 1, 2011.

CONGRATULATIONS to Bert Ongkeo who received an Individual Excellence Award for his hard work during last week's Employee Recognition celebration.

Dr. Pierre Saadeh presented a paper at the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery in Maui Jan 10-14: The Osteocutaneous Radial Forearm Free Flap: A Novel Implementation For Single Flap Reconstruction of Midface, Upper Lip Deficiency and Near-Total Nasal Defects. Tepper OM, Michaels J, Setty N, Capla J, Haddock N, Ceradini DJ, Hirsch D, Levine JP, and Saadeh PB.

Dr. Phuong Nguyen gave an oral presentation at the 25th Annual American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery Meeting in Maui, HI last week: 1/10-1/13/09. "Effects of High Dose Radiation on Hypoxia-induced Neovascularization" P.D. Nguyen, O.Z. Lerman, V.D. Thanik, R.J. Allen Jr., S.M. Warren, P.B. Saadeh, J.P. Levine

Dr. Nguyen was also a co-author on another paper entitled "Versatility of the Radial Forearm Free Flap in Facial Resurfacing" D.J. Ceradini, P.D. Nguyen, A.Hazen, J.P. Levine

Dr. Daniel Ceradini presented two papers at the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery in Maui Jan 10-14:
1) Versatility of the Radial Forearm Free Flap in Facial Resurfacing. Ceradini DJ, Nguyen PD, Hazen A, Delacure MD, and Levine JP.
2) Long Term Follow Up of Microsurgical Correction of Facial Asymmetry. Ceradini DJ, Saadeh PB, and Siebert JW.

Dr. Nicholas Haddock presented a paper at the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery in Maui Jan 10-14: Lower Extremity Arterial Injury Patterns in Patients Requiring Free Flap Reconstruction: a Fifteen Year Review. Haddock N, Weichman K, Garfein E, Ceradini DJ, Levine JP, and Saadeh, PB.

Dr. Tomer Avraham is an author on a paper entitled "Synthesis of a Tissue-Engineered Periosteum with Acellular Dermal Matrix and Cultured Mesenchymal Stem Cells."
