Mission

The Mission of the Institute of Reconstructive Surgery (IRPS) of the NYU Medical Center is to maintain a leadership role inlocal, national and international plastic surgery by providingthe highest standards of patient care, by offering optimal educationalprograms and by organizing clinical and basic science researchprograms. To attain the above goals, the Institute must:

  • Provide state-of-the-art clinical services to all patientswith plastic surgery problems in an effective, unbiased andsympathetic manner. Multidisciplinary conferences are offeredfor the evaluation and treatment of complex clinical problems.
  • Offer professional training programs for plastic surgery residents,fellows and others, including medical students, rotatingresidents, practicing plastic surgeons and other professionals.
  • Organize educational and self-help programs for the benefitof patients, their families and the general public.
  • Develop symposia on a variety of plastic surgery subjectswhich would be available to all of the above.
  • Conduct research programs at both the basic science and clinicallevels on a variety of plastic surgery-related subjects whichwill lead to enhanced patient care.
  • Recruit and develop a professional staff of the highest qualitywith subspecialty expertise and a commitment to leadershipand excellence in patient care, education and research.
  • Maintain affiliations with the participating hospitals (TischHospital, Bellevue Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital,Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and North Shore UniversityHospital) which are mutually beneficial and conducive toenhanced patient care, education and research.
  • Promote avenues of communication with other health care providers,as well as private and government regulatory agencies, inorder to be current with societal needs and viewpoints.
  • Operate a fiscally independent facility to achieve the abovegoals in patient care, education and research. The Instituteshould operate without a deficit to ensure funding of theseprograms.
