Craniofacial Surgery
Sponsored by the Variety Club of New York, this team conferenceis headed by Dr. Joseph G. McCarthy for patients with severe facialbirth defects. The team consists of several of the Institute's craniofacialsurgeons, an orthodontist, prosthodontist, neurosurgeon, psychologist, geneticist, nurse clinician, ophthalmologist, and otolaryngologist. The Conference provides optimal exposure for the patients to a comprehensiveevaluation of their problem. After the patient is presented andevaluated, the team confers about the best course of treatment forthat particular patient, and the patient and family are given theteam recommendations. Many children and young people, whose familiesare unable to pay for the services and travel/accomodation costs, are sponsored by private grants and foundations for their surgery. In such situations, the surgical fees for these patients are donatedby the faculty.
