Research

The mission of the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (IRPS) at NYUMedical Center is to provide a leadership role for local, regional, national, and international plastic surgery communities by delivering state-of-the-artpatient care, offering outstanding educational programs, and conducting the highestcaliber clinical and basic science research.

Research has played an integral role at the IRPS since its inception over 50years ago. Clinical and basic science contributions by IRPS faculty and fellowshave propelled innovative therapies as well as our understanding of the basicetiopathogenesis of disease. A new era of research has begun at NYU MedicalCenter with the opening of the Joanand Joel Smilow Research Center. This 13-story, 230,000 square foot buildinghouses more than 40 multidisciplinary research teams dedicated to takingproven scientific bench top advancements to the bedside. We are excited to jointhis multidisciplinary collaborative environment and look forward to acceleratingdiagnosis, prevention, and the development of new therapies. The Smilow Research

Center joins the Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine which opened itsdoors in October 1993. The Skirball Institute, encompassing 60,000 square feetof laboratory space divided over four floors, boldly focuses on basic research, but fosters interdisciplinary activities within the NYU School of Medicine. Witha strong awareness that most medical breakthroughs originate in the basic sciencelaboratory, considerable resources were allocated in order to develop this modernresearch unit right in the heart of the NYU Medical Center. Finally, the SacklerInstitute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at the NYU School of Medicine is a divisionof NYU's Graduate School of the Arts and Sciences. The Sackler Institute encompassesthe basic medical science department at the

School of Medicine and offers interdisciplinary training programs in cellularand molecular biology, computational biology, developmental genetics, medical and molecular parasitology, microbiology, molecular oncology and immunology, and structural biology.

Our commitment to research at the IRPS is an affirmation of our belief in surgicaland scientific telesis as well as our obligation to develop a new generation ofleaders in academic plastic surgery. Our current clinical and basic science researchprogram includes:
