The
IRPS serves a dual function. Attending physicians provide aesthetic
and reconstructive plastic surgery care for patients at the NYU Medical Center,
Bellevue Hospital Center, Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital, and Manhattan
Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. In addition to providing patient care, attending
physicians are involved in laboratory and clinical research aimed at improving
the treatment of patients with a variety of plastic surgery problems. Basic
science laboratory research focuses on developmental, bone, and vascular biology,
biomechanical research,
radiation biology, stem cell and gene therapy as well
as tissue engineering. Special emphasis is
placed on the translation of laboratory findings into the development
of clinical protocols. Research efforts emphasize the development
of new approaches to tissue engineering innovative surgical approaches
to the treatment of patients’ complex
problems.
The IRPS laboratory has 10 divisions:
- Anti-aging Biology and Aesthetic Surgery Research
- Bone Biology
- Computational Biology & Surgery Research
- Developmental Biology
- Biomechanics Research
- Radiation Biology
- Stem Cell Biology and Gene Therapy
- Tissue Engineering
- Vascular Biology
- Wound Healing
